Read the special articles on Bluetooth and motorcycles:

One of the top motorcycle communication/intercom manufacturers, Chatterbox, are releasing a new BlueTooth powered product next year.

Code named XB1, this new device is a all-singing, all-dancing device; one of those that you can only dream off.

Motorcycle Intercom Chatterbox XB1

The XB1 functions as central unit and is placed on your motorcycle, preferably attached somewhere safe.  Powered by your motorcycle's 12V, or by optional batteries, the unit provides the following functions:
  • Intercom
  • Bike-to-Bike communication (FRS/GMRS 22 channels)
  • GPS/Radar warning interface
  • Music/MP3 device interface
  • Cellular telephone interface

This means that while you're out there enjoying your motorcycle ride, you can listen to your favorite music on your iPod, while listen to your Garmin GPS giving you routing instructions and your Laser radar warnings. You can also talk to your pillion passenger, and talk to the other riders in your group.

But the most important feature is that the XB1 device will communicate with you via BlueTooth, ie, wireless to your helmet. So far, it has always been a nagging thought for me when riding with my helmet wired to the bike..... what happens if I fall and the bike slides one way, and I slide the other way ??? With BlueTooth that is no longer a problem (nor is forgetting that you're tied to your bike, which has happened once or twice).

You can now get yourself one of those nice new BlueTooth equipped helmets recently announced (MomoDesign, BMW System V) and communicate with the ChatterBox unit without the need to wire yourself to your motorcycle (while looking at the HUD inside your helmet.... who needs a multi-million fighter jet?)

Communications with other motorcycles is "limited" to a 5 miles radius, one of the largest ranges currently available. The 22 channels an 38 sub-channels give you enough combinations to enjoy a "private" conversation with fellow bikers. The unit can handle Vox or PTT communications.

Availability is planned for Spring 2005, and estimated cost will be between $450 and $500 (excluding your BlueTooth helmet). This is one interesting product...... looks like I'll be lining up to buy it.

    Bluetooth on the bike

Those bluetooth helmets that have been announced are intended for communications only.

Interesting device - Hopefully Chatterbox will buildthis better than their other products - able to withstand the elements and vibration.

Now if only the Momo and BMW units were stereo and HiFi!!!

And what of battery life for the helmet unit? What if your cellphone is Bluetooth enabled (you won't be able to use your phone's bluetooth connecion with this because the phone needs to be wired to the controller).

So unless you're a boutique rider, out for an afternoon of driving from gas stop to coffee shop, this isn't going to be a panacea until they resolve the delivery and power systems.

I'll stick with my Autocom until they prove it one way or the other.

I'm available to review the product when they release it.

There seems to be an awfull lot of buttoons on this small unit.

$500 per motorcycle seems a lot of money? Do we need two unit for Rider to passenger communication?

Will it be capable to answer phone, detect voice and play music without selecting mode or pushing a damned PTT or mode button?

Why so many connections to it? How will it know that the GPS says something if you listen to Music?

I need to see the full spec for this device! The idea is brilliant, I hope the implementation will be as well.

    Priority driven

Guy, the device is priority driven, so depending on the device, one cuts out the other channel (eg if your phone rings, it cuts your pillion).

Phone answer will depend on your phone. Most phone auto-answer, so when it answers, that channel is openend.

    communications

I just don't get the fascination or need to be in constant communication with the rest of the world while riding a motorbike??? Just what everyone needs, more distractions while riding, blah blah blah in your ears as you tool along. Have fun.

    What about pillion

What about talking with your pillion passenger when riding 1000 mile journey ??? Maybe some don't want to (for some strange reason ;-), but often it's great to hear a familiar voice helping out in the decision making process.... and if you're not wired to your bike, it does make it easier and safer.

Any news from Chatterbox? (Shipping date)

Any further news from Chatterbox on this unit? Shipping time frame? I am holding out for this unit. My cell is bluetooth enabled (SonyEricsson K700i) and I do a lot of short hops within town, this will eliminate plugging and unplugiing cables everytime I stop.

Will be nice for long rides also. Can't wait

How did you get the XB1 info, nothing on the chatterbox web site about it..

OT: I was the big BMW shop in Munich early this month and they have not heard of the bluetooth enabled helmet yet! When is the helmet shipping? Any idea?

    Many more details desired

I agree with other posters when they say that this product is both brilliant and expensive. I have very high hopes for it, but need a lot more information when it comes to what other kind of devices it will accept.

    For instance,

-what kind of phones are just going to plug in and which are going to need an adapter?

-does the unit have a voice command actuator and can it be moved to somewhere like the handle so that I would not have to remove my hand?

and while I like the idea of the bluetooth helmet, I really with that someone would come out with a universal kit that I could implement inside of my helmet. The motorola one looks horrible and I don't want to pick up a bmw one, I like the look and feel of my own.

let me know if you can when this product is actually to market please.

I am holding off to buy this unit instead of the FGMS and FRS units already out there. I have Satellite Radio on my bike and would like to listen while I ride. I hope this new unit is able to power the audio side of the Satellite so it can be heard without any seperate amplification.

CHATTERBOX!!!! Let people know what is going on!!

    Hi

I have e-mailed "chatterbox" and I was told (today 08/06/05)that they will release the unit for sale in late july.

I have a bluetooth (noise cancelling) headset butchered to fint in my helmet anyway and they tell me the brand of headset I have will work with the unit.

So as soon as its out I am up for buying one

I am one of a small group of friends (riders and passengers) that have been looking at all of the communications options. This sounds like the one. We would like to know more as soon as possible as our purchase is planned for this year.

Was very disappointed with chatterbox. They never replied to any of my e-mails regarding various points I needed to know about the xb1.Have since located a similar kit manufactured by nokia for the helmet manufacturer Scuberth.

You will find it @ website ( Schuberth head protection technology ) Go into the German side click motorad and you will find the bluesonic intercom system. Don`t know why it`s not in English yet.Happy hunting.

    Bluetooth Helmets

Just an FYI - Dainese also do a very nice line of bluetooth helmets; almost all Dainese helmets are now available with bluetooth integrated into them (i.e. no need to hack a headset up to get it to fit nicely in the helmet).

If you need any more info on them, email me!

Can the bluetooth chatterbox be used with a bluetooth headset or does it have to be a bluetooth helmet?

Bluetooth is Bluetooth, a BT helmet is just a BT headset.

New Motorcycle Communication System & BlueTooth

Thanks for the article. It's nice to know that this is coming. Or is it? These posts are relatively old, and there is still no mention of an XB1 on Chatterbox's web site. (The last update to their web site appears to have been more than a year ago.) Has the release date slipped again? February 2006 is practically over.

I've recently purchased a TomTom RIDER GPS that uses a bluetooth connection to its headset, and can optionally connect to a bluetooth telephone. Do you know if the TomTom RIDER and Chatterbox XB1 will be compatible with one-another? I'm wondering if the TomTom Rider might be able to connect to the XB1 via bluetooth as if it were connecting to a bluetooth telephone. Or would I need to connect the TomTom RIDER bluetooth receiver to the GPS jack on the XB1 with a patch cable, using a second bluetooth receiver in my helmet? Or, (please tell me it isn't so) would I need to have two bluetooth receivers in my helmet, listening to the GPS in one ear and the XB1 in the other?

Does anyone else have a similar product already on the market?

Received an email last week from Chatterbox and they expect release sometime between June and September 2006, most likely the latter. Sure sounds like the device many bikers have been waiting for.

I found an updated picture of the unit from this site:

    { Link }

    www.mxsouth.com/chatterbox/chatterbox_helmet_communicators_&_radios.htm

The discription for the helmet unit states that all the features are usable wirelessly except the passenger intercom. Are they kidding? Why would you not make this function wireless too? Wireless comunication between driver and passenger is the main reason I am looking at a Bluetooth system in the first place.
