Reevu Motorcycle Helmet with Mirror
One of the more interesting new products introduced in the Milan Motorcycle Show two weeks ago, came from an English company called Reevu. With all the announcements from the big motorcycle manufacturers, this one nearly escaped my attention.

Who is Reevu ?? Reevu is a manufacturer of bicycle helmets, with a new, very special kind of motorcycle helmet. The helmet has an integrated mirror that allows you to monitor the traffic behind you without having to take your eyes of the road !! Nifty ?? Yes, very much so in todays' busy road traffic. Any moment you take your eyes of can be fatal. This new product allows you to have an increased awareness of the traffic situation.

Reevu Motorcycle Helmet Mirror system
The mirror system is integrated in to the top of the helmet, and consists of reflective polycarbonate material, a material that reflects well but does not break on impact. The material is light, so easy to wear.

When you look through the helmet, the mirror is placed at the top of your viewing angle. So you can more or less monitor what is happening behind you without moving your eyes. For me, this appears to be a great advantage. Not only do you not need to continuously look at your side mirrors, but you don't really need to look at the integrated mirror, since it's inside your peripheral vision.

I'd say though that you need some time to adapt to the mirror system, but once done, the awareness if automatic and safe.

Here are three photos of the view from inside the helmet:

    Night Time

At night does the reflection from car head lights shine in your face?

    Light Refelection from Behind

Following is a quote from an email received from Reevu on light reflection from cars behind you:

    QUOTE:

Because we are reflecting the light through a series of reflective surfaces you naturally have light depletion as it passes from one surface to another. In all of the tests we have carried out we have found the helmets to react well to this issue and better than the mirror in your car, however it is also easy to angle your head out of the way of the light beam also stopping any possible glare issue.

    Reevu MC helmet

There is no mention of how the helmet works with a passenger. Is there any info available on that situation? Also are there any sample photos with a passenger on the Motor Bike? One thought is that now I could see my girlfrind as much as she sees me when we are riding.

    all around

I think the new helmet is really a cool new invention but I, myself think that it would be distracting seeing things that are happening behind you, along with the stuff in front. ALSO, you would have light in your eyes even when riding away from the sun or in front of a car. Even if it isn't direct light, it is still light. How would it work with a passenger? Most newer bikes have king/queen seats which means the passenger is higher than the driver so this helmet would not work. I must admit that the design looks awesome but I ask just how good will it be on my head? Has the time come where even turning my head to check behind me is too complicated? I honestly think that the world is becoming too much of a space age for our own good. Let's get back to having fun and feeling free instead of, Geezzz, I don't have my XP9000 and my HFL2500 on so I better be careful. Hummm maybe I will order that new TRE740 today in case it rains tomorrow. Give me a break. Let's just have fun ok? Signed, a boy from the old school. Bulldog!

    We´ll see

Bulldog, I think the principle of the Reevu helmet is perfect, and don't think anyone could say otherwise. The real points would be made after riding with one of those helmets.

Personally, I think it will not be distraction, just something you need to get used to. It will depend what the focal point is of the mirror, how much you need to focus your eyes, how big the image is.

We'll see when the units arrive in France....

    Info on production dates

Heres the info I received from REEVU re: possible production dates for this new helmet....

    Dear Sir:

The final production date and cost price have not yet been fixed. This is one of the reasons why we launched the Helmet at Milan to ascertain the reaction from the distribution and motorsports enthusiasts. The technology and the helmets astounded everyone. We are hopeful that production shall start in around one month to begin to deliver as samples to the trade with volume production early in 2004. The helmet will be available for all markets and will come with all of the relevant standards in sizes range from XS to XXL. It is manufactured to the best available anti scratch anti bacteria and real ventilation system in Italy. 10 years of research and development have gone into this product to give the consumer the best available product at this time. There will be a full colour range and art work graphic on the finished helmets.

    Production Director

    Reevu helmet

I don't think this helmet was meant to remove stock mirrors, especially when a passenger is involved, only to add another level of safety. Reflection of the sun a problem? Do people not wear sunglasses when they ride in the daytime? Unless you are not using mirrors at all you are dealing with reflections of car headlights at night already, what would be the difference with this helmet?

    Not really

Shawn, Not really... You're right to say it'll never replace the side mirros (same as in a car). But you can angle the helmet if you get a glare from behind. Move your helmet a few degrees up or down will not hinder your view of the road, but might stop the glare from a car with strong headlights.

I guess the proof will be in the pudding when the helmet goes on to the market.

Me, I'm very eager to try one. I do think it will add a tremendous extra amount of safety.

Mike, maybe I didn't word it quite right but I was arguing in favor of the helmet. I was thinking the same thing, tilt your head up or down a bit if you are catching that 6:30 sunset. At least you can get around that by tilting the helmet unlike the mirrors that are non-moving (for the most part). I am very much interested in this helmet also.

    Helmet

I am always looking for ways to improve my awareness of what's around me. That includes what's behind.

If there's a way to block it if riding away from a setting sun, I'd buy one.

    Regards,

    Bob
